Summary/Abstract: The goddess Robigo and her festival, the Robigalia, represent one of the most peculiar obscure areas in the history of Roman religion. Our most detailed surviving source about the festival is Ovid’s Fasti. However, this description does not dispel the obscure details but rather complicates the work of modern researchers. Several scholars in the literature have already highlighted that the author’s description of the Robigalia is a poetic construction primarily aimed at concealing the political and religious conflicts and tensions underlying the pax Augusta. Consequently, it is quite challenging to determine what the original purpose of the Robigalia festival might have been, to whom and for what reason the Romans prayed, and what kind of deity Robigo was before Ovid’s unique construction. In my study, I seek to answer why Ovid had to transform the festival, why does it receive such emphasis and detailed description in the Fasti, and how does this ‘strange’ ritual relate to Augustus’ politics, particularly to the idea of pax Augusta.
