Summary/Abstract: The topic of data governance is gaining increasing importance in the context of digital transformation and the growing complexity of the financial environment. Banking institutions in the Republic of Moldova handle significant volumes of sensitive information on a daily basis, and the quality of data management directly affects operational security, regulatory compliance, and public trust. The need to strengthen a coherent data governance system arises from rapid technological progress, stricter reporting requirements, and the pressure to adopt international standards of transparency. At the same time, efficient information management has become a strategic component of banks’ competitiveness, contributing to process automation, reduction of operational risks, and the development of data-driven decision-making. This paper analyzes the specific features and challenges of implementing data governance principles in Moldovan commercial banks, highlighting issues related to technological infrastructure, organizational culture, and the current regulatory framework. It emphasizes the essential role of an integrated governance strategy focused on data quality, managerial accountability, and information security. Such a framework can transform data management from a compliance obligation into a genuine tool for institutional performance and modernization.
