Summary/Abstract: Several medieval churches in the center of Sofia seem to be deeply “sunk” in the ground; their floors are located significantly below the level of today’s urban terrain (1.5–2 m). Due to the construction of the Ottoman ceramic water pipes in the center of the city, it was necessary to raise the terrain in order to satisfy the technical requirements. This was achieved by filling in soil taken from neighboring places. The embankment at “St. Petka Samardzhiyska” was the thickest – 2 m.
