Poland’s Security in the Political Thought of the Polish People’s Party after 1990: An Outline of the Problem

Summary/Abstract: Ever since the beginning of the systemic transfor-mation in Poland, the Polish People’s Party (PSL)has been a permanent element of the politicalscene. In the space of the Party’s political thought,there are issues related to the axiological founda-tions of activity, including the issue of ensuringPoland’s security. According to PSL, the factorintroducing a sense of security is to safeguard theindividual, family and national existence of Poles.The People’s Party has always emphasized the needto ensure the sovereignty of the state, to protectits borders and Polish citizens residing outsidethe territory of the Republic of Poland. Attentionwas drawn to the need to develop good relationswith neighbours and other countries. The partyhas made several updates in its political thoughtregarding security issues, enriching it with newcontent corresponding to emerging challenges. Inthe 1990s, in PSL programs, the issue of securitywas perceived traditionally, as the security ofthe state and its defence. In the following years, state security was to be achieved thanks to manynational or international projects, that is, amongothers, Poland’s entry into the Euro-Atlanticstructures, cooperation with neighbours, activi-ties in the framework of CEFTA, improvementof ecological security, and, most recently – thefight against the COVID-19 pandemic, modern-ization of the army, and assistance for Ukraine.As followers of the “third way”, the People’s Partypostulates pluralism in the economy as significantfor state security.
