Summary/Abstract: In the shadow of communist repression, the story of secret burials at Brno’s Central Cemetery unfolds through the voices of victims and their families. Among them was priest Jan Bula, who foresaw in a farewell letter that his grave would remain unknown—a fate shared by many executed in the 1950s whose remains were cremated and hidden. In 1968, a mass grave containing 24 urns was uncovered, sparking hope and partial rehabilitation. Yet, many urns remained lost or unclaimed, buried without ceremony or record. Renewed efforts in the 21st century led to archaeological excavations and identification of hundreds of urns, restoring dignity to victims and reconnecting them with historical memory. The symbolic reinstallation of a grave marker for resistance fighter Petr Křivka in 2025 marked a step toward justice, though the identities of many others remain obscured. This intersection of personal tragedy, political violence, and forensic recovery highlights the enduring need to confront the past and honor those silenced by totalitarian regimes.
