Summary/Abstract: Mass graves, also known as shafts, have been an integral part of Prague cemeteries since the second half of the 19th century, serving not only for social burials but also for the interment of victims of wars and repressions. This text traces their development until 1948, focusing on their administration, record-keeping, and burial methods. The conclusions show that these graves were not a product of totalitarian regimes but rather part of a long-term burial practice that both Nazi and Communist authorities exploited to cover up traces of their victims.
