Summary/Abstract: The construction of national heroes since 1918 has integrated the “poilu of 14” into its pantheon. He has thus emerged as a constant in the national narrative, glorified as a symbol of bravery, courage and patriotic sacrifice. Despite criticisms and questioning, this heroic figure persists in the collective imagination, excluding all other protagonists of the conflict, notably through war memorials, commemorative speeches, school textbooks and war literature. However, this heroism is now being challenged by historiographical currents highlighting the diversity of experiences and actors of the First World War and by the creation of new heroes who are more inspiring for younger generations.
