Summary/Abstract: History has not been kind to the old capital of Bulgaria.Between the 50 s and 60 s in the 20thcentury the huge immovablecultural and historical heritage of Veliko Tarnovo is facing the threatof destruction and disappearance. Of particular importance are thearchaeological monuments from the 12th – 14thcenturies, when the citywas the capital of the Bulgarian state. At the end of the 60‘s in the XXcentury large scale construction unfolded, shaping the newlook of thecity.For 20 years (1965 – 1985), Veliko Tarnovo became a historical,cultural and tourist center of Bulgaria by the General People’sCommittee created especially for the purpose. This is one of themost large-scale and significant state projects for the preservation,restoration and exposure of the cultural and historical wealth of VelikoTarnovo and a clear example of unity, challenge and understanding inBulgarian societybefore 1989.The decision to fully explore and restore the Tsarevets fortressgrew into a movement for the preservation of our cultural andhistorical memory.The documentary and photo archive of the All-People’s Committeeand the periodical press stored in DA – Veliko Tarnovo and RB „P.R. Slaveykov“ and others.The topic is comprehensive, so it could not be exhausted in thepost.
