Summary/Abstract: My article examines the various manifestations of discontent in individual organizations of the CPSU after the publication, in an abridged version, of Nikita Khrushchev’s “secret speech” in February 1956, which began de-Stalinization. Some of these manifestations are in defense of Stalin’s memory and image. They are especially strong in Tbilisi, Sochi, Gori, and other cities in the Georgian SSR. Another kind of discontent is directed in the opposite direction: many communists are convinced that Khrushchev’s speechdid not fully reveal the truth about Stalin’s repressions. In many party organizations of the CPSU, discussions became extremely violent, and calls appeared against the government itself. These moods were further strengthened by the large-scale protests that, at that time, covered Poland, Hungary, and Romania, and which were also a reaction to the de-Stalinization that had begun. In the end, the power in the Kremlin managed to contain the discontent, but its refusal to enter into a dialogue with the disaffected communists had a negative impact on the chances of renewing communist ideology.
