Summary/Abstract: Our study aims to approach the evolution of female identity and consciousness in two contemporary French-speaking Algerian women writers. In this context, our work will have the plays Rouge l'Aube [The Red Dawn] (1958–1959) by Assia Djebar and Princesses [You Have Come Back (Princesses)] (1988) by Fatima Gallaire as a corpus of study. The analysis will consist of two parts: first, we will try to bring out and interpret the aspects of feminine identity anchored in Maghreb daily life, and the way it is dramatised by the two playwrights. The exploration of the circumstances and mechanisms, either personal or collective, that transforms the Algerian woman from an anonymous subject and often oppressed by the rules and convictions of society to an emancipated agent of national revolution or social revolt will lead to the second part of our analysis. In this part, we aim to demonstrate that this subversive transformation of feminine identity in the two plays by Assia Djebar and by Fatima Gallaire reveals a network of gender issues based on a significant triptych of auctorial-motivated and theatrical creation: autobiographical baggage, collective imagination and feminism activism take precedence over a simple dramatisation of Algerian women.
