Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the settlement, challenges, everyday life, and social integration of refugees and migrants who arrived in Targovishte and its surrounding areas during the 19th and 20th centuries. These individuals came from various geographic and ethnographic regions of the Bulgarian lands, often as victims of military conflicts, unfavorable diplomatic decisions, and severe economic crises. The study traces the iradaptation to the new environment and their interactions with the local population during turbulent and difficult decades – especially in the aftermath of the First World War – when processes of rapprochement began to emerge between different communities. The „outsiders“ gradually gained the trust of the locals, managing to overcome resistance from parts of the Muslim population as well. The local population, too, experienced complex and often contradic to ryemotions – a mix of humanity, care, sympathy, and willingness to help, but also jealousy and fear of losing the irfamiliar and secure world.
