Summary/Abstract: Through a comparative book review,I indicate a phenomenon in literature which, exploring the origins of Polish modernity, transcends the traditional genre divisions, thatis, literary studies, historiography, or historicalgeography, taking a form most akin to landscapeanthropology. Th e publications I discuss addressthe need for a more profound understandingof the so-called industrial scars and the variousdimensions of the experience of the nineteenth-century industrial revolution, particularly itseff ects on natural environments in Polish andEuropean cities. Furthermore, I contextualisethese publications within the current fi eld ofenvironmental humanities and the studies oneco-catastrophes emerging from it. In doing so,I analyse a method of reading space that alignswith these new, evolving geohistorical narrativesand writing practices.
