Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the results of the research project concerning the identity of the Karakachani people, „CU TENDA – Stories, Images and Sounds in Motion (The Living Memory of Southeast Europe)“, conducted by a research team from the Department of Ethnology, The Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, 2015–2019. I focus, more specifically, on two interrelated problems – the functions and tasks of the Federation of Cultural and Educational Societies of the Karakachani in Bulgaria and the Karakachani’s identity as outlined in the aforementioned research. The aim of the text is not to dispute the results presented by the University of Plovdiv’s researchers, although such an unfortunate side effect seems inevitable, but rather to defend the results of my own study of the Karakachani people in Bulgaria.
