Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the beliefs in mythical and scary creatures, on whose taming depended the health and life of people in the past. The topic is based on field ethnographic materials collected in the 1960s from the Pleven region, unpublished until now. These creatures could be classified into several groups. Those that are in constant contact with humans possess human qualities and properties, even enter into coexistence with humans, such as samodivi, ala, karakonjo, etc. As well as another group – those descended from man, represented as spirits who were first people, but after death become bad spirits – vampire, goblins.
