Summary/Abstract: The study is a summary of sports and women’s history, which focuses on Hungarian women’s sports and girls’ physical education at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries. The basis of the research was the examination of the articles and images of the contemporary Hungarian press related to the topic. One of the main results of the research was a more accurate exploration of how female emancipation was associated with the democratization of sporting activities (especially skating, cycling, and female gymnastics). The author also analyses what opinions have been expressed about women who exercise. The history of women’s forms of physical activity reveals important connections not only in the history of sports, but also in the history of education, fashion and technology, among others.
