Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the development of consumerism as a social and legal reaction to market imperfections, with special reference to its evolution in the United States of America during the 20th century, and its later expansion to the European context. The four phases of American consumerism are analyzed, while the fundamental consumer rights are emphasized: the right to safety, the right to information, the right to choose and the right to reimbursement. Contemporary consumerism is faced with numerous challenges, including information asymmetry, limited consumer income, institutional passivity and market complexity. Although significant progress has been made in consumer protection, the paper emphasizes the need for strengthening institutional responsibility and continuous improvement of consumer rights, with the aim of achieving a fairer and more balanced market system.
