Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to analyze how bilateral relations between Romania and Somalia began. First, a brief history of the African state until independence will be presented, as well as the first contacts of Romanians with that region. Until 1965, relations between the two countries were almost non-existent, however, the situation changed after the visit to Romania of the Somali Prime Minister of that period, also at that time diplomatic relations at embassy level were established between them. After that, a group of Romanian specialists visited Somalia in 1966 to prospect the subsoil of the African state in search of oil and iron ore. Relations between the two countries continued to develop, and in 1967 Chivu Stoica, President of the Council of State of the RSR, became the first non-African president to visit Somalia. In the same year, the first documents establishing Romanian-Somali cooperation were signed, these being a Cultural Agreement and one on technical and scientific cooperation. In 1968, the new Somali president A. A. Sharmake visited Romania and was appointed the first Romanian ambassador to the African state, although he resided in Tanzania.
