Summary/Abstract: This paper provides an analysis of the advantages and problems of using projective methods in the study of family relationships, in clinical child research as part of expert witness work in pre-trial and judicial proceedings. 32 children were studied, qualitative analysis was applied to the projective methods that were used, the anonymity of the cases was preserved, factuality was avoided and the possibilities and limitations of these projective methods were emphasized. The difference in this study is that the analysis is mainly based on the words, the child’s narrative about the drawing, and not on the specialist’s interpretations of the characteristics of the drawing itself. The study includes 32 children aged 5 to 10 years 45% girls) who were examined as part of forensic psychological research tasks. Projective drawing tests „Draw a Family“ and its variant „Enchanted Family“ were used. The aim of the study was to diagnose the child’s relationships in the family. Qualitative methods were used in the analysis by deriving recurring „emotional indicators“ that draw attention to the child’s negative experiences in the family, as well as a content analysis of the stories in the pictures. As a result, the content analysis reveals fundamental experiences in the children’s stories: Fear, anxiety 45%, guilt 68%, loneliness 56%, rejection 63%, attachment 64%, aggression 48%. As a result, the high value of the projective methodology for the qualitative assessment of the child’s relationships in the family within the framework of the expert activity is recognized, provided that it is carried out with the necessary sensitivity and with the search for feedback from the person being studied.
