Summary/Abstract: The eff ective limitation of correctional activities in penal institutions requires, among other things, precise analysis and understanding of their psychological aspects. The aim of this empirical research is the psychological interpretation of the organizational-role and personal characteristics stimulating penitentiary institutions employees to engage in corrupt practices. The empirical research tasks are to establish the institutional-role parameters of prison employees and the impact on their personal risk readiness to engage in corrupt activities. We analyzed the intrinsic motivation of employees, the level of their demotivation, their level of tolerance to the relevant corruption manifestations and the risk of their increase. We outlined the groups of personnel with the greatest risk predisposition and the possibility of its reduction by increasing the severity and expediency of applied sanctions. We diagnosed the level of risk and sensitivity to corruption activities of prison employees with the corresponding indicators of extraversion. We also established the relationship of extraversion with the dark triad scales. We studied the relationships between global self-esteem, self-deprecation and extraversion of prison employees and their predisposition to corruption. We analyzed the contribution of global self-esteem, self-respect, narcissism and Machiavellianism to the emergence of corrupt acts among employees of a closed-type penitentiary institution. 40 active prison guards from the city of Sofia participated in the empirical study.
