Summary/Abstract: Ambiguous idioms—expressions that permit both literal and figurative interpretations—pose a challenge for language comprehension. This article reviews theoretical models of idiom ambiguity, empirical findings on how context influences comprehension (in adults, children, aphasic patients), and individual/cognitive factors that modulate comprehension. The role of working memory, processing speed, executive functions, and pragmatic perspective‐taking are surveyed. Gaps in the literature are identified, and directions for future research are proposed.
