Summary/Abstract: When it comes to Ioan Slavici's work, one of the things that's always been appreciated about this classic, especially naturalistic, author is his keen eye for observation and his talent for painting human nature. The central place in naturalist prose belongs to individuals excluded from mainstream society on grounds of identity, as is the case with Slavici's characters. Their condition as social outcasts predisposes them to violent actions in their desire to regain social validation and integrity, and naturalist writers seek to cultivate precisely this human repulsion that limits beings to instinctual actions.
