Summary/Abstract: In the Qur’ān, the practice of swearing on oath by an object is a significant stylistic feature derived from revelation, which serves to emphasise the importance of the object being sworn upon. It is acknowledged that oaths are customarily administered during specific periods of the day, as well as at designated time, due to their inherent significance. For instance, there are verses that utilise the concepts of night and day, by dawn and dusk, and by morning and evening in their imaginary. In addition to these micro-level references to particular times of day, at the macro level, there exists a unique temporal interval that is sworn upon —namely, the lifetime of the Prophet (PBUH), as mentioned in verse 72 of Sūrah al-Ḥijr. In this study, it is argued that one of the crucial aspects of this topic is that the oath encompasses the Prophet’s entire lifespan, including the pre-prophetic period, rather than being limited to the 23 years of his prophethood. It is widely acknowledged that there exists a perspective which confines the value Prophet’s exclusively to his prophetic mission and its subsequent aftermath. A further salient factor that renders this subject significant is that the life of a human being is being sworn upon. In this particular instance, it is imperative to delve into the intricacies of the act of swearing specifically by the lifespan of the Prophet, as opposed to the lifespan of any other individual or even other prophets. The significance of this oath in the context of the Qur’ān, and its meaning within the framework of Arabic language and literatüre, are questions that this study to answer. This paper sets out to explore how the Companions, exegetes, and Sufis understood the oath. The question of whether this oath has been evaluated from a legal-theological perspective is one that has yet to be answered. The present article seeks to explore the. aforementioned questions, focusing particularly on the possible meanings of the oath sworn by the Prophet’s lifetime. The objective of this study is to examine how the oath has been interpreted in the three major streams of the tafsīr tradition, namely, the transmitted (riwāyah), rational (dirāyah), and symbolic (ishārah) approaches. In addition, the study will investigate how the oath contributes to Sufi thought. Furthermore, the article seeks to draw parallels between the exegetical and Sufi approaches to this oath. The present study, which will adopt a textual analysis as its methodological approach, a decision that is of seminal significance insofar as it treats the issue under investigation an independent object of analysis. In conclusion, it is observed that both commentators and Sufis express similar views on the value of the Prophet (PBUH) in the eyes of God; however, Sufis interpret the oath on a metaphysical level and employ it to support the concept of the Muḥammadan Reality (ḥaqīqat al-Muḥammadiyya) and the elevated status of the human being.
