Training Legal Translators by Means of Legilinguistics

Summary/Abstract: Drawing on professional experience in the fields of legal translation and the training of language professionals, this research aims to shed light on the interest of using jurilinguistics tools and resources to train legal translators. Emerging as disciplines in their own right in Canada in the late 1970s, legal translation and jurilinguistics (Gémar 1979) have evolved together, while Canadian language and law professionals have constantly contributed to the creation of centres of expertise such as the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques (CTTJ) at the Faculty of Law of the University of Moncton, indispensable resources such as the Juridictionnaire developed by jurilinguist Jacques Picotte for the CTTJ, and Termium Plus, the Government of Canada’s terminology and linguistic data bank. In our globalised and network-based societies, legal translators working for international institutions, as well as sworn translators, feel the need for specific training in order to find answers to their linguistic and extra-linguistic questions. An introduction to methods and resources used in jurilinguistics can prove beneficial, particularly in terms of discovering strategies for translation challenges, identifying specific lexicons and data banks, optimising the practice of legal translation and improving the quality of the translation process and products.
