Summary/Abstract: In the book Secolul al XX-lea între roșu și negru [The 20th Century Between Red and Black], Cătălin Ghiță—an experienced professor of comparative literature—offers a compelling interdisciplinary exploration of the 20th century through the lens of cultural and artistic expression. Rather than presenting a purely historical narrative, the book analyzes key political and ideological moments in tandem with representative works of art, literature, music, and cinema. Beginning with the death of Queen Victoria and Freud’s early psychoanalytic theories, and culminating in the fall of communism and the post-9/11 world, Ghiță illustrates how artistic creation not only reflects historical events but also actively shapes them. From avant-garde art to absurdist theater, and from wartime compositions to dystopian films, the volume argues that art serves as both witness and catalyst in times of crisis. The book combines historical insight, philosophical depth, and literary analysis in an accessible style that appeals to both scholars and general readers.
