Summary/Abstract: Tailored to fit the communist ideas on the new era ahead, M. Sadoveanu’s Mitrea Cocor (1949), a story about class revenge of the abused and the justice of forced collectivization coincides with the newly theorized Romanian socialist realism. The 1951 French translation by Claude Sernet, a prominent figure of the Paris avant-garde movement, (by his real name Ernest Spirt, a.k.a. Mihail Cosma), represents not only a clash of two literary ideologies but also a political statement of zero tolerance for the antisemitism as part of the 1950s communist propaganda. This paper aims to address the topic of translation as propaganda from both literary and ideological standpoints.
