Summary/Abstract: On the basis of several famous Byzantine churches on Crete, the paper discusses characteristics of their architecture, which represent an aspect of the transposition of the streams of the Byzantine ecclesiastic architecture in the middle period. The starting point are early monuments with а simple layout of space, broadly dated to the end of the 10th or the beginning of the 11 th century, that is, single-nave domed churches such as the church of the Virgin in Miriokephali, or the church of St Eutychios in Hromonastiri, both in the region of Rethimno. Churches with а dome and а cross-in-square ground plan are also discussed, starting from older churches such as Ayi Kyr-Iani in Alikianos dating from the 11 th century.
