Experienced Versus Commemorated Places: The Image of the Łódź Ghetto in Diaries and the Present

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the experience of places in the Łódź Ghetto as depicted in prisoners’accounts, and confronts these with current commemorations of the ghetto’s traces.Using the methodological framework of the so-called spatial turn in contemporaryhumanities, the article investigates the experience of space in one of the largest ghettosin occupied Europe based on texts produced “there and then.” The first layer of selectedplaces consists of testimonies and diaries written by ghetto prisoners “there and then.”The author supplements these elements with descriptions of the current functioningof this site, along with contemporary commemorations, to confront today’s image withprisoners’ perceptions of the ghetto. The article attempts to change thinking aboutHolocaust commemorations in the spaces of large cities.
