On the translation of specific terms from German into Lithuanian using the example of education as a challenge in specialised communication

Summary/Abstract: Regarding the discussion about the translation of specific terms from German into Lithuanian, the categories of specialised communication are of relevance. Specialised languages as varieties of the standard language do not generally present the translator with any problems that cannot be overcome. The translation of technical and other terms and specific terms, on the other hand, is not unproblematic and requires a special approach. Although specific terms in the field of education can be distinguished from codified terms on the one hand and culturally specific realia on the other, they cause considerable difficulties in the translation of documents, which can be overcome by means of certain procedures. Literal translation and loan translation as analogous equivalents can only be used to a certain extent. Rather, procedures for closing word and conceptual gaps dominate. Such procedures are mostly target-language orientated and are used for the translation of subject-specific terminology, job position and degree titles. These findings correspond in part with the results of the random questionnaire survey, which emphasised terminological and technological difficulties. The results of the corpus analysis have shown that designations of study programmes, teaching and study forms can be translated both in a target-language-adapting and source-language-preserving way and that no universal rules can be applied. In the field of education, there are only a few research studies on the German-Lithuanian language pair. A small number of explanatory glossaries are available in Lithuanian. This article therefore provides an overview of a comprehensive set of tools that can be helpful to translators.
