Summary/Abstract: This paper proposes a diachronic approach to the lexicon, especially within the Romanian language, in order to work on the Alexandria text and to identify whether the etymological layers of the Romanian language are present in it, as well as whether the semasiological categories are found in its pages. The choice of this work is justified by its literary and cultural value, as it is considered the first popular novel of our literature, widely spread in the Middle Ages and appreciated by the whole nation. The presence of Alexandria in Romanian culture has been analyzed by many Romanian researchers, including B. P. Hașdeu, Moses Gaster and Nicolae Cartojan. Therefore, we consider that the lexical units identified in this popular novel deserve to be carefully investigated by specialists. Consequently, in this article, we intend to examine, in particular, the terms referring to fauna found in the Alexandrian texts from a double perspective: etymological (tracing the origin of some words) and semantic (rendering their meaning and possible semantic changes that may occur). In this sense, we will make a hierarchization of these terms on the basis of lexico-semantic fields, according to the species and zoological classes to which they belong, in order to delimit and classify them in a rigorous and appropriate way. For this reason, we will restrict the semen /animal/, taking into account two other common properties: /domestic/ and /wild/. At the same time, the animal names will be classified according to the zoological class to which they belong, including: mammals, reptiles, birds and fishes. Even if Alexandria belongs to Old Romanian literature, the whole of its lexical phenomena constitutes a significant corpus, worthy of meticulous research.
