Summary/Abstract: This article presents the lexicalization process from a semantic point of view, through the transfer of meaning between two lexico-grammatical classes, which have different acceptances of meaning. In order to analyze the semantic aspects related to the transition of proper nouns to the class of common nouns, we propose a definition of the lexical meaning, of the specific relationship of proper nouns with the denotative or with the referent, considering the semantic explanation of the conversion of proper nouns into common numbers. From this perspective, the lexicalization process involves changes in the semantic features of the source subclass (proper nouns) and the target subclass (common nouns). Regarding to the meaning of proper names, there have been numerous scientific debates, which have highlighted the following aspects: 1. the absence of meaning in proper names; 2. the extension of the meaning of proper names wider than that of common names; 3. the meaning of proper names is confused with the motivation for attributing the proper name; 4. the meaning of proper names is specific, differing from the meaning of common names. Usually, proper names are devoid of semantic content when analyzed individually and represent simple symbols. In many cases, with proper nouns, to manifest meaning, context is usually required, because the connection between the noun and the object in denotation is established contextually through situational elements. But, to achieve the meaning, proper nouns are dependent on a certain type of context. This paper also included the semantic transformations of proper nouns in their transfer to lexical class. These semantic transformations are closely related to partial lexicalization. In partial lexicalization, we consider that the transformations of proper names into common nouns are achieved through the stylistic process of antonomasia.
