Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the layers of freedom, starting from two Romanian contemporary novels (written by Gabriela Adameșteanu and Bogdan Creţu) and guided by the intellectual beacon according to which freedom is not similar to the release of the inner demons. Beyond the thematic differences, both novels explore levels of time that allow the reconstruction of contradictory epochs from the point of view of political and civic freedom. Within this framework, I investigate the changes brought about by the transition from totalitarianism to democracy, insisting on controlled memory, on self-censorship, and on various types of freedom. Last but not least, anchoring the discussion in an interdisciplinary ground, my paper concentrates on the moral foundation of liberty and analyzes the healing impact of storytelling, as depicted in the novels Voci la distanţǎ [Voices in the Distance] and Mai puţin decât dragostea [Less than Love].
