Summary/Abstract: Infinitives preceded by an article are a distinctive feature of classical and post-classical Greek. This paper focuses on how such substantivised infinitives after a preposition are rendered in Old Church Slavonic. The constructions in question are: ἀπὸ τοῦ + Inf., διὰ τό + Inf., διὰ τοῦ + Inf., εἰς τό + Inf., ἐκ τοῦ + Inf., ἐν τῷ + Inf., κατὰ τό + Inf., μετὰ τό + Inf., πρὸς τό + Inf., πρὸ τοῦ + Inf., ὑπὲρ τοῦ + Inf. Using a full excerpt of material from Constantine of Preslav’s translations of the Didactic Gospel and the Oratio Prima contra Arianos by Athanasius the Great, as well as the Roman Patericon, the Thirteen Orations of Gregory of Nazianzus and Symeon’s Izbornik of 1073, the paper juxtaposes attested translation strategies and contextualises them against the tradition attested in Gospel and Psalter translations. Several features appear to be specific to Constantine of Preslav’s translation technique, such as the frequent use of the conjunction “zanye” and the strong tendency to employ paratactic syntax in the Didactic Gospel compared to the other examined texts, which mostly use syntactic solutions involving deverbal substantives. Furthermore, translations considered to be East Bulgarian origin (or Preslavian, as per scholarly tradition) exhibit a strong preference for constructions with the conjunctions imьzhe and yakozhe. Other occasionally attested translation solutions, such as hotěti- constructions, the dativus absolutus and the so-called “conditional”, are also discussed.
