Re-enchanting the Transformation. The Work of Alicja Żebrowska from 1982–1997 and Art History

Summary/Abstract: This article explores the esoteric themes in Alicja Żebrowska’s work, emphasizing the motif of mystical wholeness. Żebrowska is remembered as a classic of so-called critical art. The article argues that this interpretation has been created in isolation from the artist’s intentions and the symbolism of her works. Starting from Silvia Federici’s concept of “re-enchanting the world,” the text analyzes the process of rewriting Żebrowska’s books as an element of the extraction of communal visions and imaginations, typical of capitalist modernization. The analysis covers Żebrowska’s most important works from the 1980s and 1990s. The canonical art history texts of the 1990s are also used as a point of reference.
