Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of Bulgarian theatre in the modernisation of public life. From its very birth, theatre has been perceived as a part of the modern urban culture, born from the ideas of the European Enlightenment. This impulse determined its place in the life of society throughout the 20th century. The article outlines the phases of theatrical development as spiritual and material accumulations during the different historical periods of the Third Bulgarian State and points out the challenges faced by Bulgarian theatre at the beginning of the 21st century.
