Summary/Abstract: The subject of analysis is six paintings from the cycle Tsar Times by the artist Yoan Leviev (1934 – 1994). They are considered within the context of European medieval culture and more specifically in view of two of its phenomena, which are undoubtedly the square and the court jester. It can be summarised that the paintings of Yoan Leviev, included in the cycle Tsar Times, are a testimony to the intellectual’s rebellion against the repressive apparatus of the totalitarian government in our country until 1989. From an artistic point of view, his jesters are highly impressive characters, evoking exciting reflections among connoisseurs of our latest pictorial art.
