Summary/Abstract: What might the landscape of theatre look like in the next 20 or 30 years? What challenges must it confront to move forward and remain a vital and beneficial component of human culture? To what extent will it be influenced by technology, the new economy, and the generational divide between Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers, a divide that touches upon philosophy, management, structures, and objectives within the field? What role will the green transition play amid other urgent challenges? While there are undoubtedly many additional concerns that could be addressed, this article concentrates on what the author sees as the most pressing issues. By homing in on these key challenges, it aims to chart a course for the survival and evolution of theatre in a time marked by profound change, whether demographic, technological, ideological, economic, or otherwise. As the well-known saying goes, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” This idea captures the central task facing theatre today: to shape its future actively and decisively before it is shaped by external forces.
