SPELLING OF ONE TYPE OF COMPOUNDS

Summary/Abstract: One of the most problematic issues in terms of spelling is the spelling of compounds. Complex words formed from foreign words that enter the language almost every day worsen the situation. It is worth noting that they are written differently in a foreign language, although, naturally, this will not be appropriate and correct for the Georgian language. The recommendations for spelling such words are as follows: 1. A compound, the first part of which is a foreign lexical unit (a whole or truncated base of a noun) will be written together, without a hyphen, if putting the connector da semantically between its constituents is not meaningful. In particular, two options are distinguished depending on the base: a) The first component is consonant-based: პრემიერლიგა “Premier League”, პრემიერკლასი “Premier Class”; პრესცენტრი “press center”, პრესსპიკერი “press spokesman”, პრესკონფერენცია “press conference”; ტრენინგკურსი “training course”, ტრენინგცენტრი “training center”; ბონუსქულა “bonus point”, ბონუსბარათი “bonus card”; ვეტექიმი “veterinarian”, ვეტმომსახურება “vet service”; ბიზნესფორუმი “business forum”, ბიზნესიდეა “business idea”, ბიზნესშეხვედრა “business meeting”; სერვისცენტრი “service center”, სერვისადმინისტრატორი “service administrator”, etc. The exception is პრემიერ-მინისტრი “prime minister”. It can also be written as a single word პრემიერმინისტრი. b) The first component is vowel-based: ვიცეპრეზიდენტი “vice president”, ვიცეპრემიერი “vice prime minister”; კინომუსიკა “film music”, კინორეჟისორი “film director”, კინოგახმოვანება “film dubbing”; მედიაკომპანია “media company”, მედიამაუწყებლობა “media broadcasting”, მედიამენეჯერი “media manager”; ტელეგადაცემა “TV program”, ტელეკომპანია “TV company”, ტელეწამყვანი “TV presenter”; რადიოგადაცემა “radio program”, რადიოკომპანია “radio company”, რადიომაუწყებელი “radio broadcaster”; ვიდეომასალა “video material”, ვიდეოკოლაჟი “video collage”, ვიდეოგადაღება “video recording”; აუდიომოწყობილობა “audio equipment”, აუდიოჩანაწერი “audio recording”, აუდიოწიგნები “audio books”; ფოტოსესია “photo session”, ფოტოგადაღება “photo shoot”, ფოტოპირი “photocopy”; ავტოგაქირავება “car rental”, ავტოსესხი “car loan”, ავტომომსახურება “car service”, etc. 2. Compounds consisting of more than two components that include foreign words (a whole or truncated base of a noun) express one common concept and, accordingly, are written together as a single word. Their constituents as a whole convey one common meaning (and not as separateindependent words). Therefore, like the compounds discussed above (კინომუსიკა, აუდიოჩანაწერი, ვიდეოკოლაჟი, etc.), they are written together as a whole word, since the connector da cannot be placed between them semantically, e.g., რადიოკავშირგაბმულობა “radio communication”, რადიოკინოდანადგარი “radio cinema device”, რადიოფოტოტელეგრაფი “radio photo telegraph”, ელექტროვაგონშემკეთებელი “electric railcar repairer”, ოტორინოლარინგოლოგი “otorhinolaryngologist”, ავიამოტორმშენებლობა “aircraft engine construction”, ავტოჯავშანმანქანა “armored car”, ვიდეომაგნიტოფილმი “videotape film”, რადიოაერონავიგაცია “radio aeronautical navigation”, ელექტროკარდიოტოპოგრაფია “electrocardiotopography”, etc.
