Summary/Abstract: The following article talks about the 2007 movie California Dreamin’ by director Cristian Nemescu. In it, the author makes a comparison between growing up in a small rural town and the way this environment is portrayed in the before mentioned movie. A brief historical and political context of the time period is discussed prior to the movie being presented, such as the television shows that were prevalent at the time and the way new commercial products were integrated post-communism, all of these filtered through the lens of the author as a child. The article tries to convey the feeling of seeing for the first time Romanian culture in opposition to the American one from a satirical point of view, how it morphed into a talking point in a small town and the cultural impact the author felt as being part of at the time.
