Summary/Abstract: This article will first present a brief conceptual history of ecstasy, then Schelling’s double concept of ecstasy will be analyzed: the ecstasy of God and the ecstasy of the “I”. We will interpret Schelling’s concept of ecstasy from a philosophical and theological perspective, bearing in mind the complexity of his work. In the end, we will not be satisfied with the claim that this concept can be used to understand the development of philosophy in the 19th century, but we will conclude that Schelling’s concept of ecstasy can serve as a key inspiration for contemporary philosophy.
