Hybrid Sociability: A New Data in the Relationship between Media and Legal Truth

Summary/Abstract: The advent of digital technologies, which are being incorporated into relational activities, has contributed substantially to the transformation of modes of sociability within our societies. At the same time, the transformation of sociability is reconfiguring the boundaries between the public sphere and the justice system. With this in mind, this study explores the characteristics of hybrid sociability in Morocco, its impacts on social relations and rites of sociability, as well as the challenges it poses for the conduct of legal proceedings, and especially the establishment of judicial truth. Based on a mixed methodology involving statistical analysis and a qualitative survey of the most high-profile legal cases between 2018 and 2023, the results highlight that online interactions via social media have introduced new forms of social connection in Morocco. They also appear to generate a new space for public debate with the potential to challenge judicial proceedings and verdicts.
