Resilience, Challenges, and Social Integration of Ukrainian Adolescents in Cluj-Napoca

Summary/Abstract: This study explores the experiences of Ukrainian adolescent refugees in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It emphasizes their daily lives, the challenges they face, and their resilience in adapting to a new environment. By January 2023, over 137,384 Ukrainians had received temporary protection in Romania, approximately 80% of whom were women and children (UNHCR, 2023). Through a qualitative approach, the study aims to gain a deep understanding of the specific challenges faced by adolescents and to identify effective support and intervention strategies. The research results highlight integration barriers as reported by adolescents, such as language barriers, discrimination, difficulties in adapting to the Romanian educational system, stigmatization, and social isolation. Another aspect of the findings shows that adolescents employ various coping strategies, such as building new social relationships, participating in community activities, and using digital technologies to stay connected with family members in Ukraine. Support from family and the Ukrainian community in Romania plays a crucial role in facilitating the adolescents' adaptation and integration. Adolescents' views on the future are diverse; some wish to return to Ukraine after the conflict ends, while others hope to stay in Romania or seek opportunities in other European countries.
