Summary/Abstract: The present paper is part of a broader research project on the totalitarian period in Bessarabia, an era of crises and violent changes—war, deportations, famine, exile—reflected in literary writings. Many of the writings of that period could not be published when they were written due to adverse socio-political conditions and censorship. Therefore, they were only published in the 1990s, after the democratization of society, presenting interest not only as a source for reconstructing the period they reflect, but also as a way of recovering destinies that had been forgotten or overlooked. In our research, we refer to Nicolai Costenco's writings from the Gulag, his correspondence with his family and friend Dominte Timonu, and the autobiographical novel "The Story of the Eagle," written in Siberia between 1955 and 1956 but only published in 1998 in Chișinău. The novel consists of diary excerpts about his detention in the Siberian Gulag due to manifestations of nationalism.
