Summary/Abstract: Federico Fellini’s films are renowned for their richly complex characters, whose development is deeply influenced by their personal biographies. We will explore how Fellini constructs his characters through the lens of biography, emphasizing how their pasts, memories and histories shape their identities and actions. Central to this process is the way biography provides emotional depth and complexity, offering insights into the psychological and existential dimensions of Fellini’s protagonists. Drawing on films like 8½, La Dolce Vita, Amarcord and La Strada, the essay demonstrates how Fellini’s characters are not only products of the narrative, but embodiments of broader themes such as memory, identity, fantasy and reality. Additionally, it discusses how autobiographical elements in Fellini’s work create a personal connection between the director and his characters, further enhancing the emotional resonance of his films. Ultimately, the essay argues that biography is a crucial tool in Fellini’s filmmaking, enabling him to craft characters that transcend individual stories and reflect universal human experiences. Biography serves not only as a way of developing emotional depth and complexity, but also as a tool for exploring the broader themes of identity, memory, and the passage of time. Fellini’s characters are never just individuals - they are living representations of the inner workings of the human psyche, shaped by their pasts and the social contexts in which they live. Through his use of biography, Fellini creates characters that transcend their roles within a narrative and become universal figures, embodying the existential dilemmas and universal truths of the human experience.
