Summary/Abstract: With the adoption of the 2024 Ordinance on Scientific and Interdisciplinary Areas, Fields, and Branches (Official Gazette, 3/24), Communication Sciences were formally established as an independent scientific field within the social sciences in Croatia. This recognition reflects the long-term development of a dynamic, methodologically diverse discipline shaped by shifts in the media and communication landscape. Using a narrative approach to disciplinary identity (Sugimoto & Weingart, 2015), the paper explores the institutional development of communication sciences in Croatia through key actors, scientific associations, educational structures, administrative processes, and scientific production. Emphasis is placed on the importance of establishing communication sciences as a field that enhances research capacity and the international visibility of Croatian academia. In the context of digital transformation, with emerging platforms and social media, new methodological and theoretical frameworks are required, reinforcing the need for systematic study and continued growth of the discipline.
