Summary/Abstract: This article explores a lesser-studied aspect of Nikolay Kaufman’s scholarly legacy – his research on the Turkish music from Bulgaria, contextualized by his theoretical work, methodological approaches, and fieldwork materials. The exposition traces and thematically organizes his contribution into four main topics: 1) The music of Bulgarian Turks in comparison with the musical folklore of Bulgarian Muslims; 2) The music of Bulgarian Turks within the tradition of laments in Bulgaria; 3) Influences of Turkish music on Bulgarian rural and urban folk songs; and 4) Turkish music from Bulgaria viewed from a historical perspective. Drawing on publications and archival materials, this overview seeks not only to outline Kaufman’s knowledge of the subject – shaped entirely through his personal field experience – but also to highlight the breadth of his research interests, as well as his characteristic attention to detail and precision in applying analytical methods of comparative musicology.
