The Secret Life of Romanian as a Foreign Language. Oral and Written Comprehension in the Age of Chat GPT

Summary/Abstract: In 2023, when the first chatbots became accessible to internet users without restrictions, the process of understanding the input in a foreign language had already undergone several significant changes in education. Among these, there was a growing dissolution of strict boundaries between listening and reading in a foreign language. After such an "analogical" shift, the subtle presence of artificial intelligence also crept into education, inevitably introducing new strategies and activities in the classroom. This study aims to investigate the methods and consequences brought about by this new dynamic in receptive language learning activities, used in the study of foreign languages. Additionally, it dedicates space to the challenges and limitations posed by Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly ChatGPT, to users, whether they be teachers or students, when these tools become frequently utilized in the teaching and learning process of Romanian as a foreign language.
