Summary/Abstract: The Esterházy family, prominent in Hungarian aristocracy, opened their centuries-old collections to the public in the 19th century, starting with a Viennese palace picture gallery. After 1867, their historical objects were frequently loaned to Austro-Hungarian exhibitions, raising exhibition standards and introducing the public to private collections. This study uses historical sources to examine the lending process and public presentation of these private collections, highlighting the family's social responsibility in sharing their heritage.
