Summary/Abstract: Legal protection of wolves in Poland is regulated on three levels: international (Bern Convention),EU (Habitats Directive) and Polish (Act on Nature Protection, ANP). At present, Canis lupus is understrict species protection in Poland with some derogations. The article presents the challenge ofproper interpretation of the substantive premises in compliance with the provisions of the HabitatsDirective and the methodology of such proceedings. In decision-making on the derogation permit, the precautionary principle and the relevant CJEU case law play a crucial role. In such cases, the Pol‑ish nature conservation administrative body is obliged to observe such multilayered legal contextwhile issuing the derogation permit.
