Summary/Abstract: The enlargement of the European Union has historically gone through various procedures and events. The enlargement of the EU is followed by agreement and opposition even among the members of the EU itself. The expansion towards the Western Balkans as one of the most strategic regions of Europe has been accompanied by a multitude of developments, from the aspect of the policies and events that this region produces to the skepticism of the acceptance as a whole of different democratic models within the Union. The previous expansion has highlighted various problems within the Union, these situations are directly affecting the membership process of the Western Balkan countries, fatigue from the problems caused by these expansions have begun to weaken the general opinion within the Union. Eurosceptic attitudes have appeared during the journey of the countries of the Western Balkans towards EU membership. The EU has a long list of major challenges to face such as common defense, energy transition, environmental challenges, Europe's relative technological and digital backwardness or the unsatisfactory common migration policy and others. As of 2024, there are ten countries aspiring to EU membership: six in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) and four in other regions (Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Turkey).
