Summary/Abstract: In the European Union’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly alternatives to road transport, particular attention is given to short sea shipping and the concept of Motorways of the Sea, which serve as maritime links within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The functioning of Motorways of the Sea—understood as the concentration of freight traffic along selected maritime routes—is aimed at relieving road transport congestion and improving accessibility to island and peripheral EU Member States. Polish port connections classified as Motorways of the Sea include ferry and ro-ro services from Gdynia to Karlskrona and from Świnoujście to Trelleborg. Data analysis indicates that obtaining Motorway of the Sea status strengthens the position of ferry terminals within sea-land transport chains, notably through access to EU financial support facilitating port capacity upgrades and the expansion and modernisation of hinterland connections.
